Another great project at Kwetu: the freedom of expression workshop
The Kwetu Film Institute has the great pleasure to supervise another incredible workshop sponsored by the GIZ. The workshop on freedom of expression runs under the title “Shed Light on Your Right.” It began on May 27th and will be finished by the end of July.
Ten participants were chosen to work with Sandra Kaudelka, a German director from Berlin, on their scripts. Together with two former students from the Kwetu Film Institute, Shenge Ndimbira and Jules Sibomana, they talked to journalists and lawyers about the term “freedom of expression” and what it means. Kaudelka helped participants to write scripts that dealt with the right of free expression, especially the right to talk about social issues that are frequently overlooked. With partners from the GIZ, Kaudelka chose three scripts that will be realised by the end of July.
Ndimbira says that she and the other participants learned a lot during this intensive time. Now they understand better what it takes to transform a script into a film. The skills they learned during the workshop will also be useful for upcoming projects. Janvier Nyandamu (Fiction), Frank Mugarura (Social Spot), and Shenge Ndimbira (Fiction) have now finished shooting their films and started to edit them. The official screening of the three films will be held in August.
Stay tuned for more news on this great project!
